Detective raccoon is looking for problems – Backbone review
The text in games is used in different ways-someone adds it to learn more about the Universe of the game, for example TES or witcher, someone makes it the main narrative technique, as in visual novels. If in the first case the text is only one of the many mechanics in the game, then the visual novels use almost the only mechanics in the game – the choice of replicas, because of this, such a genre becomes less massive and like such games not everyone. Backbone is easier to call a “book with animations” than one of the above examples, although there are definitely similarities with them.
Plot
The game tells of the beginning of a private detective, which, through an ordinary, as it seemed, is a matter of something terrible that is happening under everyone else’s nose. This is a matter of revealing the main character to digging in himself simultaneously, revealing the role of villains in this crime and starting new friends.
Howard (as the main character is nonukcasinosites.co.uk/300-deposit-bonus/ called) is very vulnerable, with suicidal inclinations, an alcoholic. His friends and old acquaintances will save him from suicide and dependence. Each of them will be a unique character with their own motives, and everyone with their own distinctive feature, which is why watching them becomes even more interesting.
A feature of the game is the world as similar as possible to ours, but all people were replaced with anthropomorphic animals. They have their own hierarchy in this world, for example, only monkeys can be politicians, and scientists are mainly hares. This is reinforced by the rear views, simultaneously telling the history of the culture of this world.
Backbone is a book
The main reason why Backbone is an animation book is the absence of gameplay and the possibility of choosing. Backbone is an exceptionally linear game that does not allow to turn the other way. According to the plot, we will move exclusively on the only rails that the developers laid and this is not bad at all. Without the possibility of a choice, we can feel an excellent plot, excellent characters and an excellent world, so I do not consider this a problem, but rather an advantage. You can simply enjoy the story without thinking about the choice and about “I did the right thing or not”.
The game contains levels where you can talk with citizens who willingly talk about the lore of the game, and sometimes about familiar characters. At these levels, you can find puzzles that rather perform the function of stretching the game than make it more exciting. Here lies the difference from visual novels.
Of course, the whole text is accompanied by excellent pixel art (I will attach the most outstanding screens at the end of the article) and excellent animations, but there are some questions to music. Music here is present as an amplifier of emotions, for example, when a plot turn occurs, the music begins to play something exciting and it goes well. Play mainly jazz 50x – 60s, they perfectly complement the detective story. There are excellent vocal compositions that you definitely can’t call superfluous, but sometimes the music stops playing at all that is why silence occurs and only buttons on the mouse or gamepad are heard.
The game is really a “book”, maybe not everyone will like it, but I am sure that she will find or have already found it. I believe that the linearity of the game made it possible to focus on the developers on other aspects of the plot, and that is why the game will be remembered by many, from the world of the game and its characters.
